Old School 'Mario' Kraft Dinner

At the risk of losing all legitimacy I’ve established to date, I bring to you this amazing ‘recipe’ – Old School ‘Mario’ Kraft Dinner, a.k.a. my vice!  Now, before you ream me out for posting a ‘recipe’ for a pre-packaged product with all kinds of preservatives and hard-to-pronounce ingredients (this coming on the heels of my granola bar post about trying to avoid these types of things), I can’t help myself. This is my crack! I could seriously eat Kraft Dinner every day for the rest of my life and never grow sick of it. If I know it’s in the house, it doesn’t stand a chance!

I’m probably revealing too much about myself at the moment, but I don’t possess the control to put the spoon down! Every box of Kraft Dinner is a shameful gorge-fest. A straight-out-of-the-pot, using my ‘kraft dinner spoon’ (yes I have a special spoon), eat ‘til it’s gone type meal, that sends me into a world of shame/happiness – don’t judge and don’t dare ask me to share.

Now, this ‘recipe’ is for the old school Kraft Dinner I remember from childhood. Any true Kraft Dinner connoisseur recognizes the merits of each variety of KD, and likely holds one of them as a favourite. Original is nothing but a tasty time, and I LOVE me some spirals, I even enjoyed the KD spaghetti they tested out for a while, but for me, nothing compares to the taste of the character Kraft Dinner!

To be honest, I’m not sure why they gave up on the stuff? Maybe it was a cost thing, maybe for some bizarre reason it wasn’t a big seller? Or maybe they just stopped selling it where I live? Either way, it’s something I think they should seriously consider bringing back! But until then, for those of you out there longing to chinch yourself full of cheesy-character-pasta-goodness, this recipe is for you!

Ingredients:
  • Character-shaped pasta – I’ve purchased Disney pasta in the past, but in this case I used imitation Cars pasta I found at Wal-Mart. You just need funky shapes.
  • Packet of KD cheese
*Note: You can also purchase powdered cheese at the bulk barn, it tastes very similar; however, achieving the proper amount of cheese is more of a challenge.

Instructions:
1) Boil your water then add the character-shaped pasta. Cook until aldente and drain.

2) Prepare Kraft Dinner as you normally would…. To be honest, I can’t remember the last time I read the instructions; I’ve been making this on my own since I was 10, possibly younger! So lop in your butter, milk and cheese, stirring after each addition! Then serve up some tasty nostalgia!!

All together now 'MMmmmmmmMMMmmmMMMmmmmMM!!!'

  1. Hahaha funny I just came across this. I am also from NL and I actually just wrote Kraft asking them to bring the stuff back... or since I've seen a commercial from the states for Ninja Turtle Kraft Dinner to begin producing that stuff in canada. I'll keep you updated on whether I get a response or not.

    1. Just googled Ninja Turtle Kraft Dinner and it looks soo good! Can't believe they still make it and it's not sold here! Hard times. Keep me posted, I'm very interested to know why we don't get it here. Perhaps I shall write them as well! Glad to know I'm not alone!! ;)

  2. What I sent:

Hello, i'm 26 year old male who has been having cravings/nostalgic thoughts over your discontinued Super Mario Kraft Dinner. Regular Kraft Dinner does nothing for me. The texture is not the same, and the lack of shapes are frankly boring. Today I saw an american commercial for your counterparts Ninja Turtle shapable Kraft macaronie and cheese. Needless to say my heart began to race and my mouth began to water, bringing back all the nostalgic taste and feelings from my Super Mario Kraft Dinner eating days. I ran to my computer and came here to see if it would be offered in Canada and it doesn't seem to be a part of your product line. I almost began to break down and cry. I decided to come here to vent my frustrations and ask you to consider people like myself and join
your american counterparts by offering this product.

    Sincerely,
    Stuart Gallant

  3. Their response:

    Hi Stuart,

    Thank you for visiting http://www.kraftcanada.com.

Unfortunately, the product you've asked about is not available in Canada. Our company consists of independent operations in several other countries. Each company manufactures and markets products that appeal to the needs of the consumers in their area, so products that are sold in one country may not be available in others.

While we never like to miss an opportunity to increase sales, we only sell our products through retail stores--and not directly to consumers. I'm sorry to disappoint you, and I hope you'll look for the many other Kraft products that are available here.

Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy our products.

Sadly looks like no shapable Kraft Dinner in the near future. Upsetting to say the least.

    1. I'm crushed! Maybe they should re-evaluate the demand here... clearly it exists, we're not the only ones drooling over the Ninja Turtle ads.

Must look into bulk orders from the states! In the meantime, I guess this makeshift version will have to do.

    2. Maybe I'll take the shawshank redemption route and write a letter every week asking for them to bring it back. They can't ignore me forever.

    3. I support this idea. We need a petition or something to convince them! We're definitely not the only ones.

    4. Hey Stuart, not sure if you've heard, buttttt you can now officially buy shaped Kraft Dinner at Walmart! It appeared a couple of weeks back - maybe your letter worked?! Naturally I've already had some... It's a tinge different though, looks like they stopped using tartrazine in the recipe which I believe is what gave it, its golden lustre! lol Either way, it's still amazing!

    5. I just came back to tell you that I found some at Dominion the other day. Apparently you are way ahead of me on this topic. I have had it and yes it will do. Sadly last week I was in the states and tried the ninja turtles stuff and it seemed to be better... but maybe it was the beer I had consumed. Either way i'm happy there is currently an option to deal with my cravings.

    6. I hear ya lol I also feel as though it's my duty to purchase the stuff every time I'm in the store so they don't take it away again. Hard times, but the best times really! Oh Kraft Dinner, what a tangled web your cheesy noodles have trapped us in.

  4. It's so rare that I just randomly find other Newfoundlanders on the internet and this is made that much more strange because a fit of nostalgia over Super Mario KD brought me here.... I'm totally going to have to try this.

    1. ha! It's actually hilarious, because the commenter before you did the same! Turns out they still have shaped Kraft Dinner in the states, so the nostalgic people are probably just within our province, or the rest of Canada. With that said, if you've got a hankering for shaped kraft dinner, it just popped up 2 weeks ago at Walmart here in town.
